In this document, I'll outline everything essential to plan a press kit what I find is most important. To delve into why this is important because most movies have a statement and such or a social media around them before releasing to create more hype for whatever is showcased. How they do this, the directors and publicists of said product usually release a polethera of images and screens of what is actually being shown. Like the blair witch project which included a lot of images and screens displaying the missing students.
PRESS PACKS
A clear example of website design and thematic purpose, alongside this press pack also features a synopsis of what happens in the show, the main characters it also features a continuaton or a showcase of some new characters. The redesign, makes this fresh and exciting because it transforms the old characters giving them depth and a whole new purpose.
One of the stills from Minions rise of Gru (a movie which comes out in July) showcases a little Gru, this concept is fascinating because this hasn't yet been delved into in terms of the films lore. It's also a continuation of the first movie because they teased at a trailer at the end of a movie. A perfect way to tie up loose ends. These character designs, are perfect because of how flashy they are. They also handpick some scenes from the trailer that are heavily animated they've also been modified to be very clean and polished, expanind on their art style because these characters have changed and have a redefined purpose.
Another example of an authentic press pack, is this merch by Netflix featuring a whole new brand. What comes alongside this, is the merch as well.
This shop is a perfect example of what a press pack layout should look like featuring merch, also a trailer for this product.
I think that the last scene of this trailer, is a nice touch.
this shows the date of when this film is premiering it also shows the characters sitting up to watch their own movie. I think it builds more hype, because I personally think this is the most exciting thing to happen ever it is genuinely a cultural reset in terms of media. Film news has been ever so slow recently and I think that a new minions movie is really exciting.
The topscreen, shows the product including a traile to the chilleez. They've been known to feature as icons in netflix's history amongst other shows. Although not a reference to anything, they are apart of netflix's own brand and are their original idea.
They've also got an introduction to each of them, with an interactive feature including a button placed on each of them so you can see a description and garner a greater understanding of what they are/why they have their own shop. This is good for branding because it creates a mascot for Netflix, which netflix so desperately needs as they haven't a character connected to their name as of late. So to connect themselves to something cute or recognisable sticks with people.
I've also wanted to copy this layout on the site canva to replicate how these characters are placed and displayed because of how this is a unique idea. Making a site interactive makes it fun to retain information and garner key themes from it.
this is the site that I'll be working on, and the reference is from this press pack to try and go from the same formula of creating a new site.
The behind the scenes shots are also here, they show to scale how big chillys actually are. Featuring how fluffy they are. It also grounds them in reality because chillys are a product they showed how big they are, what they actually look like to scale and in reality asides from how well it was shot. They also show them next to an employee of Netflix showcasing that they are real.
UNIQUE CAMPAIGNS
Another thing that I want to analyse for my planning is social media planning and try to replicate the layout by using canva the social media campaign, done by the blair witch project is great to model off of because how they used the attention surrounding these missing students, how vague this plot is and the danger a lot of people believed these rumours the plot actually seeming authentic.
I want to touch on how they've used realistic evidence and showcased little footage of the evidence of the characters, what happened to them in the aftermath. I find this a clever way of giving hints to the plot and story by implementing eerie photos of damaged equipment and how they've disappeared.
By using the wayback machine, I can see where the controversy rose from because these stills are incredibly natural including candid photography to display the cast and crew doing their normal tasks before the accident. The use of candid photography was taken advantage of because of the way they seem very old, static and lifeless these photos seem real because of the lack of lighting and focus made only to show the crew. Investigating, making the viewers wonder what happens next I want to model of the cast and crew off of this style of photography because it's really effective in the horror genre a lot of fears revolving around this is because it may not seem real or slightly off for example why a crystal clear picture in 4K wouldn't work the same as something in low quality is because of what we can infer from it. They've also based their movie off of found footage so their whole marketing campaign was more-so about seeming as authentic and believable as possible instead of cheap fear. They wanted to instill something unique and deap seated eerie fear works well for them.
Evidence, is also a good touch. How I could draw reference from the car is try and take photos of Tracey Wiggintons evidence such as the knife, the police tape also include candid photography of the body that was hurled into the waters following the crime I think it'll be clever to implement a lot of these moments because they signify that every detail was accounted for. I want this press pack to be as unique as possible.
A lot of these shots really make this disappearance feel real, it was like everything was accounted for even the information circling around this case it felt real.
I'm thinking of copying this layout the amount of unused space and how it's purely used for information gives me the chills because it seems old and dated, meaning the information seems more likely to be based in truth. The way the layout is portrayed is dated which gives a sense of it's time.
SPIDER DIAGRAM
I made a list of things that would be relevant to make a film trailer really pop and make it eccentric, like the introduction to new music or music that would fit and go alongside the theme. Also including the different types of interactive media that will pop up such as buttons to lead you to another page to inform you of the synopsis of the entire trailer and what it's about, these themes also lead into what happens like how it's about how true crime and horror blend together in a mesh of everything like I feel as if both of these themes really work together. I feel as if I could put together a list of the evidence using the photography present in true crime cases, basing it off of the car which is present in my analysis. Building off of what I've said, I wanted to do a black and white sepia theme for this press pack and make it seem real providing little to no information on the case to make it seem a lot more obscure. Making it seem like a sequel to the very real vampyr case featuring a new kind of murder. Although the budget muddies the premise I want to make it feel as real as the blair witch project. Which is why my analysis is there.
Most of these, are just what comes apart of promoting a new project like different types of social media. I really feel the most important one is twitter because twitter is good at spreading misinformation, usually if a source is from a twitter link and it's a real case it's not real however a lot of people believe it thus making rumours. If I made a twitter around this case people could believe something much similar happened by using faux polic reports and fake evidence. Promos could be in ads (promos are like paying celebrities to promote your product) product placement is even evident in movies for example, some animated movies can promote brands like nestle coca cola etc. LIST OF WHAT I WANT TO INCLUDE:
