There's multiple roles that go into making a film trailer today I'm going to scour which ones are important and explain my part into the creative process and why it's important to the development of a film trailer. I wanna discuss my role as the director/storyboarder and why this is essential to pushing the story forward. I'm heavily involved in the creative process because I push a narrative and also control what ideas are pushed. By creating artwork I display what shots are going to be displayed.
WHAT IM IN CHARGE OF
A film director visualises the screenplay, I've discussed in my blog many times though in detail what a directors job is, so I'll keep this brief.
I'm also in charge of editing this script into something tangeable and understandable by using these characters as I want to figure out an outline for what's most important by using traits and motives highlight what characters are important also by using special effects to change the setting by doing this the weather and feel of the shots are different because of how dark/light it can be.
I wanna give a brief rundown of what storyboarding is before we continue as I contributed to this production a lot by providing the group with shots and what sound effects to edit into this production enhancing it's inherit value.
My responsibility is important to visualise the script and how it will progress forward.
Visualising what happens scene to scene is essential to the progression of the shoot because it conveys everything that the themes are meant to be such as crime, the drama surrounding the victims yet also trying to capture the actors true essence by drawing what will happen and making these illustrations much more vibrant and expressive making our production more original surrounding how I mixed together a lot of significant shots that really progress the story further. By capturing taking notes of what sound effects to use this is essential to the progression of the story beceause of how much can be told throughout a shot. Say if it's a solemn scene then a character may be looking down out of a depressive state or if it's of the court we can include what props are needed to be used, like what characters are shown and who acts as the main instigator to further the plot. Telling a story throughout shots because of how much emotion really cracks down into each scene making them special.
These kinds of shots are displayed through a comic like manner and through drawings most storyboards are used to communicate a linear structure for the trailer, by including what scenes are most essential and an outline of how to shoot them properly. From scene from scene theses shots communicate what's most important for a trailer what is most needed, why these shots are needed to visualise and create the perfect story. I completed them on my own, using a little guidance from my group by using the postic notes this was perfect because I was able to compartmentalise what's most important in a trailer they also contribute to the story mountain because they have the same structure a beginning middle and an end.
This will impact the trailer greatly because a lot of cinematographers go off a outline of what to shoot (ie what shot types are important and what captures the emotion of a scene perfectly) while going off of a lot of drawings can be hard to replicate I managed to put some instructions as to what will be necessary and what kind of shot types it could actually manage to play around with, mostly this is due to the fact that I tried to study a cinematographer and see how his work plays out to make a scene more heavy hitting then it really should be going off of former techniques this was an idea thought of by myself to try and play around and control the scene. The colour scheme and palette will also be alongside these both themes, I tried to make it more heavy hitting and harsher by introducing darker colours throughout sketching to portray the idea of angst because it follows alongside a murder which is a tragedy. Following alongs this idea a lot of the shots have to be more serious and tense, which meant I had to be a lot more creative with the storyboard.
I also edit in between of these shots adding what kind of scenes are going to be dimmer and less bright because of the meaning that's behind them like for example how much brightness can truly give to a shot.
Transforming the portrayal of each shots by adding different colours making a sense of purpose present within each scene which makes it all the more interesting.
I want to play around with the progression in each scene and then try and make the saturation a lot less lower to show little to no colour, which ties into what happens into the plot this is fitting because of how many shots need to rely on the colour because of the bleak nature of the plot, I wanna include a lot of lighting adjustments being as it's getting light outside and we have to alter a lot of these to make it seem as if it happened at night by adjusting the contrast of the image. Making the picture less clear which adds to the mystery of what happens within this trailer. Because it involves a lot of crime/murder between. Because of this adjustment this film will also fit the codes and conventions of most horror movies that follow accordingly because of the dim lights and the context of what happened it adds to the atmosphere, atmosphere is important within a trailer because movies have to leave an impression on the audience and leave them hooked coming back for more. I want to make this clear about what tone to use, because of the tone of the plot the lighting and atmosphere also need to be transformed.
Heavy focus is on Tracey Wiggins. She is the main character and main focus of the entire trailer making her the sole focus, a lot of the shots and shooting revolve around her meaning we have to make her interesting enough for the audience to want to see more of her. If she's written as boring/bland or not a believable character our story could easily come across as low brow or not much effort put into it. I'll try to brainstorm more ideas of how Tracey Wiggins actually acts by researching into her past and trying to see how she behaves. This gravely effects the plot because without a main character that's likeable then the story can't really progress with an air of fear or mystery no matter how much effort is put into the cinematography.
WHAT I'VE PREPARED
I've prepared a list of notes on how to shoot, brainstormed on how to capture the proper atmosphere of a shoot considering how essential this is to truly transform a shoot. I've also tried to prepare a list of notes of what I can edit to transform the picture, because if the atmosphere is weak and doesn't capture the true essence of what makes this murder horrific then I can't proceed. I've studied some horror movies, thriller and documentaries to see how the genres codes and conventions are implemented to usually display a tragedy within the show and what happened and why the audience should sympathise which keeps us watching. Seeing the backstory of these people and also witnessing their tragedies, making us attached to the character. Including a lot of information which is involved between transition such as giving exposition on what has happened, what is happening and who this effects.
Editing is also one of my jobs because of how I want to take some parts of these scenes and exploit them to their full potential which will involve taking apart what the standard is for horror/thriller movies and trying to make the transitions and effects replicate what happens within. I've wanted to be in charge of the sound design and explore what kinds of foley artists should be used like the running sound effects/stomping sound effects. Also replicating shot for shot in the storyboard. I'm also in charge of the music what kind of music is suitable for a trailer and what the usual things are seen within a trailer is essential to figuring out what kind of show this is.
Referring back to this video it's known to take reference from most blockbuster hollywood trailers which is the pink print to how to make the perfect trailer as it implements a popular song/cover to get the audience already familiar within the world. A lot of care is also taken into what characters and what kind of struggles do they truly go through by displaying the danger within fast progression using the technique of a montage to swiftly display which types of scenes happen within the show. It's important to take note of how this is usually a suspenseful or action trailer that's being used however a lot of the techniques are important to take note of like how it's edited or how the transitions are used within the progression of this film.
Which is the role that I've taken on for the shoot is the director, to edit this production also to see the different kinds of shots that are important to convey a certain idea.
I am going to fulfill this role by bringing my responsibility forth to transform each scene into it's own unique picture playing around with the shots and editing them is also one of my main responsibilities. this will bring forth what ideas I really have for the shoot I want to implement and I will be editing/directing to give the talent a grander idea of what the character acts like and why. What sort of tone to use in the dialogue and the mannerisms I picture Tracey wiggins to have. This is essential because the characters need to be taken seriously.
most of this information is taking from job profiles and what they actually do, how they do their job and how this improves the productions quality.
LIST OF JOBS TAKEN ON BY MY TEAM:
SCREENWRITER
screenwriters are key to figure out what characters are being used and where it's set they also write the script within what material they are given for example thriller/documentaries. They need to find a clear idea for what is going to happen in the trailer and commence and use the script as inspiration
ACTORS
Actors capture the essence of the characters written by the screenwriters, they are perfectly casted to portray a role to make the story progress. A lot of actors utilise what they are given and what information is given to them about the character.
CAMERA OPERATORS
Camera operators are the ones that capture each shots and move the lens around to show what happens between each shot. Usually exploiting the setting and utilising mise en scene to really make a shot grand.
MAKE UP ARTIST
To make the actors fill the role and fit within the shot a lot of make up artists are involved to either age up or try to make a character seem younger usually by using heavy makeup to make an older actor younger or younger actor older. Normally makeup artists are really needed when a flashback happens and they use the same actor to seem either younger or older.
PRODUCER
producer holds the main idea for the film and communicates this idea to the rest of their team, really holding the artistic merit and idea for what's about to happen.
